How to draw Steampunk?
Steampunk: a short definition
Before we get started, let's define what steampunk is. Steampunk is a design and fashion style that combines historical elements with anachronistic technological features inspired by science fiction. With steam punk, the technology is usually heavily influenced by the Industrial Revolution with steam-powered technology. It is typically symbolized by a series of metal objects powered by steam. To draw steampunk effectively, it is essential to adhere to some fundamental rules.
Steampunk drawing: how to start
Finding an idea
Steampunk drawings can be a lot of things. Therefore, it is advisable to always start with a basic idea, and then make it steampunk. To shape your idea, we recommend you take a sheet of paper and start with a basic idea. Write down all the words and concepts that make you think of this idea, mixing in Steampunk, Victorian and Gothic elements. It all depends on your taste! Then circle the words that make the most sense to you, and you'll have a clearer idea of the drawing you want to depict.
Here are some steampunk drawing ideas:
- An urban steam engine
- A female warrior surrounded by machinery
- A heart with its interior made of machine parts
- A pocket watch and clock
- A Steampunk-Victorian house
- An airship
Shaping your idea
For example, if you want to draw a steampunk machine, it should be the main element of your drawing. Ask yourself, for example, what mechanical elements might exist on this machine (pipes, cranks, gears...) what form it might take (robotic, zany...), or what function it has. You will also find on many websites inspiration to better immerse yourself in the universe and origin of steampunk. To give better attributes to your steampunk drawing, rely from the start on the idea that you are creating a machine. It is possible to grant your machine all the elements you want, even surreal ones. Your machine could also have sensors, legs, wings or eyes. However, do not forget the steam engine, which is an essential element of the representation.

Draw the central element first
Your task will then be to practice drawing a steampunk machine. As for the colors to use, it is recommended to favor dark colors such as brown, blue, gray or black. These different colors listed will be very useful for giving a dark aspect to your steampunk drawing. Ideally, draw a large number of articulated metal parts and gears. These elements must be drawn with a certain precision to have a perfect view of the whole. It is also necessary to highlight the main lines defining your steampunk drawing.
Add objects from the victorian era to your drawing
It's important to set the scene for the object of your drawing. it must take place in the Victorian era. Without hindering yourself, you can assemble them gradually as you draw your steampunk. Think about drawing inspiration from the aesthetics of the most famous Steampunk films like Wild Wild West or The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. These objects can include, among others, a phonograph, a hammer, a horseshoe, each fulfilling a specific function. However, remember that anything is allowed to make a steampunk drawing! Steampunk designs are often highly detailed. Remember, Steampunk is anything but minimalist, so don't hesitate to add lots of detail. If you are not used to drawing in the steampunk style, first practice with simple objects like gears. Adding a background adds authenticity and completeness to your artwork. However, this step is not necessarily required. The most important thing is that you're satisfied with the result!
